Marianne Carlson of Jefferson is impressing judges of Iowa State Fair food contests as she does every year. In the first four days of the fair, she grabbed four blue ribbons and a pair of red ribbons.
She netted $400 for a church kitchen fund with her first place entry in the Our Iowa Church Cookbook Favorites contest. The money goes to the church that published the cookbook Carlson used. Judging criteria were taste, appearance, creativity, and a description of the recipe’s origin.
Carlson won the blue ribbon in the Casual Appetizers division of the My Favorite Tone’s Recipe contest. The contest required use of at least two Tone’s spices or extracts. Entries were judged based on flavor and appearance, use of Tone’s spices, and a written description.
She also placed first in the Bud Elwell’s Old Fashion Fudge contest and in the bread category of Golden Ridge Farm’s Taste of Honey Challenge.
It is second place finishes that have netted her money. She received a $150 gift card for her second place overall in the King Arthur Flour Yeast Roll contest. It was her first place whole wheat pan rolls that were ranked second in the overall competition. She also received honorable mention with her butterhorn rolls.
Her red ribbon in the North 40 pie contest was good for $75 cash. North 40’s challenge was to create an award-worthy fresh strawberry pie, with judging based on flavor, consistency and appearance.
Two sets of Jefferson twins placed in the Twins, Triplets and More contest judged Aug. 7. Avril and Becca Shahan were first place in the Under 1 year – most alike category. Karen Pope and Kay Moranville, placed fourth in the 18 and older – most alike category.
A pair of Greene County HS FFA members earned ribbons in FFA shows. Brittany Gunn showed the champion Netherland dwarf rabbit in the four class breeds division of the FFA rabbit show Aug. 7. Wade Wuebker showed the reserve champion in the junior Western pleasure 2- and 3-year-old class of the FFa horse show, also Aug. 7.
